Quotes from Children during 2009 Vacation Bible School
“I
was stung by a mamma jelly fish. I know because I saw a small one
beside it.”
“Yesterday my God sighting was when my dog laid a new baby puppy.”
…From a grandmother “He loves this Bible School. As soon as he gets in
the car, he starts singing.”
…From a 4 yr old—“My God sighting is the leaders and workers all this
week.”
…From a mother from another church that has a Bible School that runs
0ver 200…”Even though we have a Bible School, my kids always ask if they
can go to “that other church “ for Bible School. Thank you. My kids
have such a good time at your Bible School.”
…Question:” What do you think will be the hardest thing you will have
to face this week?” Answer: ”Sitting still, being quiet, and
listening.”
Observation: One child really grew this week as he truly learned to let
others go first, even to the extent of waiting outside the bathroom…
Vacation
Bible School’s theme this year was
CROCODILE DOCK
WHERE FEARLESS KIDS SHINE GOD’S LIGHT…….and
guess what?????? The kids were not the only ones who shined God’s
Light------ALL the adult and teenaged workers were Fearless as we sang
with great joy at the daily Swamp Stomp. Thursey Sutton and Judy
Nibbelink, along with other daily helpers made sure the Snack Shack was
bountifully supplied with wonderfully exciting treats such as bugs and
boils and promised pizzas. BIBLE BAYOU was a different scene every
day: one day the burning bush, one day a place where the great PHAROAH
(John Hill) made an appearance; another day, the place where God spared
the Israelites at Passover------a transformation every day because Jean
Albright and helpers (including her granddaughter, Stephanie and her
friend Miss Barth) stayed every day after Bible School was over to make
it happen. CRAWFISH CRAFTS AND MISSIONS led by Pam Heidt was something
every child could hardly wait for each day. I am sure the presence of
Pam’s grandchildren heightened her joy as she helped them in Crafts.
They made “sight lights,” key chains to which they added a different
Bible point each day, alligators, and bookmarks. Barbara Patton, Beth
Garner and Milby Wade helped every day. Kudos to Pam and her “helpers”
for going “above and beyond the call of duty” in making the unbelievably
intricate name tags for each child. Dockside Drive-In led by Al
Steffens was also a favorite. The kids as well as the adults were
intrigued by the MOBIUS CURVE. And no Bible school would be complete
without GATOR GAMES, aptly led by Fr. Jim Friedel and Cody Debler.
There was silly string, plenty of water and plenty of running and talk
of God.
Day
1 we learned that God is with us; day 2,God is powerful; day 3, God does
what he says he will do; day 4, God gives us life, and day 5, God cares
for us. The children as well as adults looked for God Sightings……seeing
God’s love in action, or seeing God’s power in action.
Seeing
the wonder, excitement and anticipation on the faces of all those
involved in Vacation Bible School is something that remains in my heart
long after VBS is over. Experiencing the generosity of this
congregation in the gifts of money, time, talent, food, and prayers
always astounds me and brings me to my knees as I am reminded of how God
always goes before me and prepares the way. Thanks to those of you who
helped move furniture.
Many,
many thanks to our teenagers who took off work, changed schedules, or
just made time to be at VBS-----namely Erin Drinkwater, Meagan Lee, Will
Douglas, and Justin Lee. And lastly, a huge thanks to my husband Jim
Reed who did the painting of Crocodile Dock, the focal point of our
Vacation Bible School.
